Check Out the Hidden Laundry Room in This Custom Master Bath

Reclaimed wood, stone slabs give the modern space a rustic twist

Designers Shea and Syd McGee of Studio McGee installed hidden stackable laundry appliances and a unique gray slab countertop to make their custom master bathroom stand out.

The McGee home’s master bathroom features a traditional flat-bottomed soaking tub, his-and-her sinks, and a unique laundry area. Because they had some extra space in the bathroom, the husband and wife team added a laundry closet with a stackable washer and dryer set and an automatic steamer.?

Their previous home did not have enough storage, so Shea McGee says they really invested in making sure they had functional spaces to keep their toiletries and decorative items.

“We had a recessed area here, and I decided to add a bank of drawers with a counter top where I put products, towels, toilet paper, and can display pretty perfumes and jewelry up top,” McGee says. “We did open shelves above, and we kept towels accessible on the bottom shelf.”

Though the bathroom is a mix of traditional shapes and modern finishes, the designers also wanted to add further texture to the project with some rustic elements to contrast with the clean fixtures. “We brought in a reclaimed beam,” Shea McGee says. “It was quite a beast to install, but I love that it adds a dimension to our new build that we wouldn't have otherwise gotten if we just kept everything brand-new.”

Along with the reclaimed wood, the McGees also used gray stone slabs as accents in the bathroom vanity and shower bench.?

Transcript: “The McGee Home: Master Bedroom”

We're in our master bathroom today last week. We shared our bedroom, and today I'm going to walk you through all of the finishes and details throughout our space.

We started with the plumbing: When you are designing a home, you put the plumbing valves in the walls long before they do drywall. So you select those finishes really early. I fell in love with this tub, and really everything is centered around this beautiful traditional shape and this cross handled faucet. Here we mixed Kohler and Kalista products together so this is a Kohler and then our faucets are all Kalista in the polished nickel finish.?

A gray slab countertop adds a unique touch

I really wanted to tie in silver tones and have the room still feel warm. We did the warm wood tone on our vanity, did these really cool flush inset pulls throughout, and I had it set up on taller legs so it felt more like a piece of furniture. I think that one of my favorite elements in this face is that we did a gray slab countertop. This is an unusual feature: it's not something that we do often. It really just ups the level of our bathroom. We did two tall mirrors and I love in the reflection that you can see what's happening here around our tub. We have the whole tub area framed out with these two-tone drapes.

Rustic elements accent the modern bathroom

I wanted to bring in rustic elements with all of the clean fixtures we have throughout. So we brought in a reclaimed beam and it was quite a beast to install, but I love that it adds a dimension to our new build that we wouldn't have otherwise gotten if we just kept everything brand-new.

We did this beautiful marble mosaic throughout the entire floor. We centered the space with a vintage rug, but for real usability outside of our shower, we have this beautiful new bath mat that we just launched. A beginning coat with these tassels in this cute striped detail and also these towels these towels are amazing they're like a 750 gram weight, which basically means that it's very very plush and absorbent, but it doesn't get too heavy that it takes just forever to dry. One of my favorite features is that it has this really great linen band on the edge and you can just see even while I'm holding it they're so fluffy.
